Dundonald High School’s annual prize giving got a facelift this year. The event which is normally staged in the evening time was moved to a lunch time slot. The event was watched by our invited special guests, past pupils and parents. Afternoon classes were suspended to allow all staff and pupils to attend the festivities. There were three past pupils who came along to talk about their experiences during their time at the school and to talk about what they are doing now, Alex Kane, Steven Legge and Mark Morrison Alex spoke of her love for the school and that she was amazed at the negativity of some of her peers when she left our school to join the Sixth form at Belfast Royal Academy. She reflected on how many of them found their educational experience as being quite negative and took great pride in the fact that she loved her time at DHS. She also reaffirmed the fact that if you work hard, you will succeed! Alex is now studying at Queen’s University, Belfast. Steven informed us that after leaving DHS he pursued a career in ICT and has graduated with a Computers Degree from The University of Ulster. Steven is also responsible for designing the new school website. Mark Morrison presented the awards to all of the pupils taking part. Mark plays for and has captained the Belfast Giants and was an excellent choice to present the awards to our success stories. Under the watchful eye of SEELB Chief Executive Mr Stanton Sloan and other dignitaries the event was a roaring success. As usual Ms Adair and the music groups and choir provided an excellent sound track to proceedings and in the words of Freddie Mercury we all felt proud to say that “We are the Champions!” Well done to all involved and to Mr Prentice for his wonderful vision for improving this event. |

ENTREPRENEURSHIP MASTERCLASS Students from Dundonald High School learnt the secrets to creating a positive employment future for themselves during the Young Enterprise Masterclass at La Mon Hotel. Nine students listened to successful local entrepreneur Nial McKeown from ION Marketing, as he passed on some of his entrepreneurial wisdom. The workshops, organised by Young Enterprise NI as the next step in its schools programme, are aimed at 14-18 year olds and designed to help students to think about opening their own business as a career option. During the Masterclass, students learned how to identify the key entrepreneurial skills required to start their own business, including who to approach concerning financial matters and business advice. |

IKEA TRIP OUTSTANDING SUCCESS! The Belfast branch of the IKEA chain of furniture superstores has invited Dundonald High School to form links with the company. The school has been on one trip already with another two in the pipeline. The trip included a tour of the store with informative talks on issues such as Health and Safety, Recycling and Human Resources. The company also treated the pupils to a lovely free lunch in their restaurant. Not only were our pupils great ambassadors for the school but the tour guide said they were the best group of pupils that the store had ever given the tour to! Special thanks to Mrs Karen Todd for organising the link. |

HISTORY TRIP Mrs Patterson and the History department went on our annual field trip to Carrickfergus Castle as part of the Year 8 History programme of study. As usual the pupils were given the opportunity to explore this excellent example of a Norman stone castle and to try on different outfits from the period. Lunch was consumed in the dungeons and all involved had a ball on this excellent adventure! |
