Modern Languages

Modern Languages Department

Mrs Davidson is head of the Modern Languages Department. The aim of the department is to make foreign language learning a fun, stimulating and successful environment offering insights into the culture and civilization of the foreign language countries, namely France and Spain. The aim is to provide pupils with the practical skills necessary for communication, travel and work abroad.

KS3

In Year 8, the pupils are given the opportunity to study both French and Spanish. They will cover all four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The pupils learn about the culture differences as well as studying the languages and they do this in a variety of fun games, exercises, activities and role plays. At present, the pupils study the "Tricolore" course in French and the "Caminos" course in Spanish. In Year 9, the pupils will choose one of the languages to carry on until the end of year 10.

KS4

A language is optional at GCSE level but often proves to be very beneficial in later life. A number of careers such as Law, Sales, Marketing, Media, Tourism, PR, Business, Aviation may often require a foreign language.
The programme of study for GCSE French or Spanish builds on the skills taught at KS3. The pupils follow the AQA specification and the course is intended to be enjoyable and educational. The pupils learn to communicate in everyday situations as well as learning the language and culture.
Reading and listening make up 40% and speaking and writing make up 60% of the total GCSE.
The speaking and writing components will be monitored and tested by controlled assessment over the two years and the pupils will complete two tasks in each of these disciplines.
