English

Key Stage Three

English is largely about developing the skills to communicate with confidence and enjoyment at all levels. In all English classes there is strong emphasis on active pupil participation, the practical application of language and the enjoyment of all types of literature. Group work is very popular and oral activities including discussion, role-play and drama form a significant part of our activities.

All pupils study English throughout Years 8, 9 and 10.

GCSE

Most pupils study GCSE English in Years 11 and 12. This course will be assessed through three components:

a) Talking and Listening
b) Reading
c) Writing

The overall subject grade will be reported on a scale of A*-G. The Talking and Listening component will contribute to the overall grade but will be reported separately using the same A*-G system.

Reading and Writing will be assessed through terminal examination (60% of total marks) and through a coursework element of 40%.

Terminal Examination

Two tiers of entry will be offered:
Foundation Tier - Grades C-G
Higher Tier - Grades A*-D

NB The Higher Tier is targeted at pupils expected to achieve Grade C or above.

Coursework Component

The final assessment will be based on the student’s four best assignments within certain contexts. Two assignments will be based on Writing and two on Reading. Pupils must provide evidence of the study of one of the plays by William Shakespeare and literature from other cultures and traditions.

The four coursework assignments are as follows:
1) A personal response to poetry.
2) A study of a Shakespeare text.
3) A written task based on argument or persuasion.
4) A personal or creative piece.

English- Entry Level Certificate

Some pupils study English at Entry Level in Years 11 and 12. This is a two year course with a final examination of 1hr and 15mins which is worth 20% of the final grade.

A coursework portfolio will provide evidence of a pupil’s reading and writing over two years and will be worth 50% of the final grade. Spelling, handwriting, punctuation and grammar will also be assessed, and pupils will be expected to keep a reading log. This also allows pupils to discuss Environmental and Cultural issues. Talking and Listening are assessed through the course and are worth 30% of the final grade.

NB A pupil working well within Level 4 at Key Stage 3 will be entered for English GCSE. Any pupil working below this level will be considered for the Entry Level Certificate in English.
