Charity Committee
Welcome to the ‘Charity Committee’ section. We hope you enjoy reading about and looking at the photographs from the wide range of events we have held this past year (2007-2008).
In total we raised over £650 from each of our events. Which is absolutely amazing. We raised just under;
- £66 for the Poppy Appeal
- £78 for Children in Need
- £85 for Sport Relief through our ‘wear your trainers to school day’
- £66 for Action Aid through our ‘Fair Trade cookie sale and staff coffee break’
- £105 for Marie Curie through our Easter Raffle
- £240 for Miss Elder for her trip to Peru
All pretty impressive!
Sport Relief
For Sport Relief we all donated 50p to wear our trainers to school. Lots of people participated including our teachers and other staff members. We raised £84.50 which has gone to an excellent cause.
Fair Trade
During Fair Trade week we had a cookie sale for pupils and staff. We sold the cookies for 20p at break time during the last week of Fair Trade. We also held a coffee break for all staff members. Everything used for this Coffee Break were Fair Trade products, the cookies, chocolate, tea, coffee and sugar. We also had a display of other fair trade products such as a Fair Trade cotton t-shirt. This event was a great success as not only did we raise money for Action Aid we also raised awareness of how trade is really unfair for farmers in poor countries.
Non uniform day
On Thursday 19th June we held a non uniform day and raised £240 for Miss Elder, (a past Technology and Design teacher, September 2005 to June 2006) who is going to spend 4 weeks of her summer holidays working in Peru:
- Helping to reconstruct Peru after last years catastrophic earthquake,
- Teaching English to students, and
- Working in the slums
We wish Miss Elder well in her work this summer.
Shoe box Appeal
We started off our charity work this year with the Bythswood Shoe Box Appeal. This proved to be a very enjoyable event, but more importantly very worthwhile. We filled an astonishing 117 shoe boxes, 77 more than what we predicted to fill. These shoeboxes were distributed in various parts of Romania, to schools, orphanages, hospitals, needy families and individuals who would most likely not receive any other present this Christmas. Over 140,000 shoe boxes were distributed this year. 19,000 of which came from Northern Ireland.
Marie Curie Easter Raffle
To raise money for Marie Curie members of the charity committee got together and decided on what to do to raise money. After a long discussion we decided to do an Easter Raffle. We decided to put together two Easter baskets. One basket had a Bunny Rabbit with some crème eggs and the other one had a large Cabury’s Easter egg with a duck and some crème eggs and mini eggs inside.
Each member of the charity committee brought in a small donation of money to buy everything for the Easter baskets. We then made the up the Easter baskets ourselves, designed posters and put these around the school and some members made announcements during year and school assemblies.
Once the baskets were made a small group of charity members went around the classes and sold tickets for the baskets. You could buy 5 tickets for £1 for the large Easter basket and got 2 chances to name the Easter Bunny for 50p. Tickets were sold during class time, at break and lunch time and also at the school’s spring concert.
The large Easter Basket was won by Mrs Kitchen and Christopher Campbell 10LJ won the Easter Bunny.
