Modern Languages
Junior School
In Year 8 pupils at Dundonald High School study both French and Spanish. In Year 9 pupils choose which language they would like to continue into Year 10.
French (GCSE)
Pupils who wish to study French at GCSE should have satisfactorily completed the Junior School course. In Years 11 and 12 pupils will study and practise four skill areas: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.
The GCSE also requires some study of aspects of background and culture. Every pupil will have the opportunity to:
- show that they can cope in the French language in a number of realistic situations
- take part in simple conversation in the language
- read and understand a wide variety of notices and signs, newspaper articles and letters
- hear and understand native speakers and respond appropriately
- understand and appreciate or tolerate the different attitudes in different cultures
- enjoy the felling of success when communicating with foreigners in their own language
Over the two years pupils are asked to complete three pieces of writing (approximately 500-600words in total) one of which is attempted under controlled conditions.
Terminal Examination
Two tiers of entry will be offered:
Foundation Tier Grades C - G
Higher Tier Grades A* - D
NB The Higher Tier is targeted at pupils expected to achieve Grade C or above.
