Science

Single-Award – Modular GCSE

Science is a compulsory subject for all pupils at Key Stage 4. We offer a challenging Single Award Modular GCSE examined by AQA. This demanding programme of study ensures that each pupil receives a concentrated science experience. The programme is delivered in six parts. In Year 11 three modules are studied and examined in November, March and June. Three further modules are studied in Year 12 and examined in November, March and May. These modular examinations make up 75% of the final marks. The other 25% awarded for a centre assessed practical unit. Single Award Science is for those pupils who do not wish to study Double Award Science, it can be offered at both Foundation and Higher Level.

Double Award GCSE

Double Award Since has been devised to suit the pupil who is successful at and interested in Science and who recognise its importance in their future. The course is a modular one with six modules being examined in Year 11 in November, March and June. In Year 12 a further three modules are studied and examined in January and June. These modular examinations make up 75% of the final marks. The other 25% of the marks are awarded for a centre based practical unit.To benefit the pupils, Double Award Science is usually taught by a number of science staff who are experts in their individual areas of science. Twice as many periods are allocated to Double Award Science as to Single Award Science.

Entry Level Certificate

Pupils are required to complete up to twelve units of work. At the end of each unit pupils sit a test set by AQA these amount to 50% of the final grade. Coursework based on written class work and experimental work is marked throughout Year 11 and 12 and forms 50% of their final mark. Pupils who complete the course successfully are awarded an Entry Level Certificate in Science.

NB A pupil working well within Level 4 at Key Stage 3 will be entered for GCSE. Any pupil working below this level will be considered for the Entry Level Certificate in Science.
